Geometric graph-based methods for high dimensional data

We present new methods for segmentation of large datasets with graph based structure. The method combines ideas from classical nonlinear PDE-based image segmentation with fast and accessible linear algebra methods for computing information about the spectrum of the graph Laplacian. The goal of the algorithms is to solve semi-supervised and unsupervised graph cut optimization problems. The methods make parallels between geometric ideas in Euclidean space such as motion by mean curvature, ported to a graphical framework. These ideas can be made rigorous through total variation minimization, and gamma convergence results, and convergence of time stepping methods in numerical analysis. I will show diverse examples including image processing applications such as image and video labeling and hyperspectral video segmentation, and machine learning and community detection in social networks, including modularity optimization posed as a graph total variation minimization problem.

fundamental role in differential geometry. The main problem is to understand the formation of singularities. In this lecture, I will discuss recent progress and future directions.

Finite and infinite quotients of discrete and indiscrete groups

The goal of this talk is to provide an invitation to the zoology of infinite simple groups. After reviewing examples of simple groups of various origin, I will present some recent results on the structure of non-discrete simple locally compact groups that are not Lie groups, and emphasize how non-discrete groups are relevant in the proof that certain finitely generated discrete groups are simple. Time permitting, I will finish by mentioning the role of the finite simple groups in exploring the quotients of certain finitely presented groups.

Bekanntlich erlauben die rationalen Zahlen neben der archimedischen Norm auch p-adische Normen. Die entsprechenden Komplettierungen sind die p-adischen Zahlen. Eine algebraische Varietät über diesen hat Modelle über den ganzen p-adischen Zahlen, welche mit Hilfe der algebraischen Geometrie behandelt werden können. Die Arakelov Geometrie versucht ein Analogon für die archimedische Bewertung zu etablieren. Verkürzt gesagt bedeutet dies, dass für ein Schema über den reellen oder komplexen Zahlen algebraische Objecte (zum Beispiel Vektorbündel) mit Hermite’schen Metriken versehen werden. Direkte Bilder (unter glatten eigentlichen Morphismen) erfordern auch den Übergang zu Bündeln von unendlichem Rang.
Über einem Zahlkörper kann man die archimedischen Stellen mit den nichtarchimedischen kombinieren um zum Beispiel eine Schnitttheorie zu konstruieren. In letzter Zeit gab es dazu einige neuere Entwicklungen.

On the 2D Euler equations with random initial conditions

PDEs with random initial conditions attracted recently much attention for the possibility to extend the range of deterministic results, usually in the direction of less smooth data. Several results are now known for dispersive equations, like nonlinear Schrödinger and wave equations. Extension of these techniques to equations of fluid dynamics look difficult but the existence of a Gaussian measure, formally invariant, for the 2D Euler equations – the so called enstrophy measure – produces new a priori estimates and allows us at least to prove existence results for almost every initial conditions, in spaces where the deterministic theory cannot work. This kind of results was proved long time ago by S. Albeverio and A.-B. Cruzeiro. Their work is revisited here, following the approach of weak vorticity formulation, developed originally to treat measure-valued solutions. With this approach solutions are constructed as a limit of random point vortices and are limit of more regular solutions, having L∞ vorticity. The topic is connected also to the investigation of continuity equations in Hilbert spaces, of stochastic 2D Euler equations and of Burgers equations with white noise initial conditions related to the strong KPZ universality class.

Extremal Problems for Hypergraphs

For a k-uniform hypergraph F let ex (n, F ) be the maximum number of edges of a k-uniform n-vertex hypergraph H which contains no copy of F . Determining or estimating ex (n, F ) is a classical and central problem in extremal combinatorics. While for graphs (k = 2) this problem is well understood, due to the work of Turán and of Erdös and Stone, only very little is known for k-uniform hypergraphs for k > 2. Already the (somewhat particular looking) case when F is a k-uniform hypergraph with three edges on k + 1 vertices is still wide open even for k = 3.
We consider a variant of the problem where the large hypergraph H enjoys additional hereditary density conditions. Questions of this type were suggested by Erdös and Sós about 30 years ago. In recent work with Reiher and Rödl it turned out that the regularity method for hypergraphs, established by Gowers and by Rödl et al. about a decade ago, is a suitable tool for extremal problems of this type and we shall discuss some of those recent results.

The geometry of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

Deligne-Lusztig varieties are subvarieties of flag varieties that were introduced and studied by Deligne and Lusztig in the 70s to realize representations of finite groups of Lie type. Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are a generalization to affine flag varieties of these classical varieties. They play an important role when studying Newton strata in the reduction of Shimura varieties. In this talk I will explain their basic properties and recent results concerning their geometry.

Sphere packings and modular forms

The sphere packing problem asks for the densest configuration of non-intersecting open unit balls at the Euclidean space. This classical geometric problem is solved only in dimensions 1, 2, 3, 8, and 24. In this talk we will present a solution of the sphere packing problem in dimensions 8 and 24. It seems that each dimension has its own features and requires a different approach. One method of estimating the density of a sphere packing from above was suggested by H. Cohn and N. Elkies in 2003. Their approach is based on Fourier optimization. Namely, they showed that the existence of a function satisfying certain inequalities for the function itself and for its Fourier transform leads to an upper bound of the density of a sphere packing. Using this method Cohn and Elkies were able to prove almost sharp bounds in dimensions 8 and 24. We will show that functions providing exact bounds can be constructed explicitly. The key ingredient of our construction is the theory of modular forms.

Mathematik Inklusiv – Herausforderungen und Möglichkeiten für Unterricht und Lehrerbildung

Die Umsetzung von Inklusion in den verschiedenen Unterrichtsfächern stellt neue Anforderungen und wirft Fragen der unterrichtlichen Gestaltung wie auch der strukturellen und inhaltlichen Ausgestaltung der Lehreraus- und -fortbildung auf. Hierbei sind Erkenntnisse der Fachdidaktik und der Sonderpädagogik sowie weiterer Bezugsdisziplinen zu prüfen und für die unterrichtliche Umsetzung sowie für weitere Forschung zu nutzen.
Im Vortrag werden ausgehend von der Situation der Grundschule exemplarische Lernumgebungen und Settings hinsichtlich ihrer Möglichkeiten für den inklusiven Mathematikunterricht diskutiert. Es gilt dabei, sowohl Phasen und Situationen des gemeinsamen Lernens sinnvoll zu planen als auch die Notwendigkeit individueller Lernsituationen zu identifizieren und zu ermöglichen.
Darüber hinaus werden Ansätze für die Gestaltung der Lehrerbildung vorgestellt und reflektiert. Neben inhaltlichen Fragen sind hier u. a. auch Einstellungen und Haltungen und die Herausforderungen multiprofessioneller Teamarbeit zu berücksichtigen.

Mathematische Bildung am Ausgang ihrer Epoche? Keine bloß rhetorische Frage

Nach dem möglichen Ausgang der Epoche mathematischer Bildung zu fragen, kann mit Blick auf den Mathematikunterricht in doppeltem Sinne als Krisenvermutung verstanden werden: Dieser befände sich in einer Bildungskrise oder einer Krise des Fachlichen. Im Vortrag wird diskutiert, warum es ertragreich sein kann, beides analytisch zu trennen und inwiefern Krisendiagnosen des Mathematikunterrichts samt verordneter Therapien bedeutend davon abhängen, ob man Begriffen wie „Bildung“ und „Mathematik“ im Kontext von Unterricht einen absoluten, überzeitlichen Charakter zugestehen mag oder diese als notwendig gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozessen ausgesetzt und für wandlungs- und beständig reinterpretationsbedürftig erachtet. Der Vortrag fragt schließlich danach, ob und inwiefern sich Mathematikdidaktik in redlicher Weise als Institution verstehen kann uns sollte, welche die Probleme mathematischer Bildungspraktiken zu lösen verspricht.

Developing statistical literacy in mathematics education?
Navigating between current gaps and new needs, contents, and tools

The place of statistics education within mathematics education has been problematic for many years, and continues to challenge mathematics educators and mathematicians. This talk examines both conceptual and practice-related issues regarding some of the many challenges facing the promotion of statistical literacy, as part of the aspiration for a numerate citizenship that is required in modern societies. The talk will reflect on some of the key challenges facing the promotion of statistical literacy within mathematics education, with a focus on specific subtopics such as understanding of statistics released by official statistics producers, probability literacy, or teaching of models related to prediction and regression. We will discuss some ideas and solutions offered by ProCivicStat, a project supported by the ERASMUS+ program of the EU, and point to implications for teacher preparation and professional development, and future research.

Wie kann man Lernende unterstützen, mathematische Strukturen zu erfassen?

Viele Lernende (in der Schule und im Studium) haben Schwierigkeiten, mathematische Strukturen zu erfassen, z.B. logische Strukturen des Beweisens oder die Struktur funktionaler Zusammenhänge. Viele Lehrende (in der Schule und im Studium) sind ratlos, was daran überhaupt so schwer ist. Fachdidaktische Entwicklungsforschung hat sich als Forschungsformat bewährt, mit dem einerseits die Schwierigkeiten besser verstanden und andererseits Ansätze entwickelt werden können, sie zu überwinden. Vorgestellt werden Vorgehensweisen und Ergebnisse zweier Entwicklungsforschungsstudien zum Prinzip des strukturellen Scaffolding, mit dem Lernende befähigt werden, sich in den fachlich tragfähigen Strukturen zu bewegen. Die Projekte passen zu Hans Freudenthals Motto, „Auch will ich Lernprozesse beobachten, um besser Mathematik zu verstehen.“

Quadratische Matrizen und ihre Eigenvektoren spielen eine zentrale Rolle in der Linearen Algebra. Für reelle symmetrische Matrizen
sind diese Eigenvektoren auch alle reell. In diesem Vortrag beleuchten wir, was passiert, wenn zweidimensionale Matrizen durch höherdimensionale Tensoren ersetzt werden. Diese Verallgemeinerung hat viele Anwendungen, denn im Zeitalter der Big Data spielen Tensoren eine immer größere Rolle. Auf der mathematischen Seite führt dies auf Verbindungen zu Dynamischen Systemen, zur Optimierung, und zur algebraischen Geometrie

Das gymnasiale Lehramtsstudium – widerstreitende Anforderungen und vermittelnde Ansätze

Das gymnasiale Lehramtsstudium im Fach Mathematik unterliegt vielfältigen, zum Teil gegensätzlichen Anforderungen, die schwer ins Gleichgewicht zu bringen sind, zumal die fachlichen Studienanteile zunehmend knapp bemessen werden. Die Studierenden sollen Anschluss an die aktuellen Standards des Faches finden und zugleich Sensibilität für die Genese mathematischen Denkens entwickeln, sie sollen sich in systematisch aufgebauten formalisierten Theorien zurechtfinden und zugleich elementare Ansatzpunkte für die Vermittlung grundlegender Ideen kennen, sie sollen fachliches Selbstbewusstsein und zugleich Einfühlungsvermögen für Lernende erwerben. Diesen widerstreitenden Zielen kann eine Studiengestaltung nur gerecht werden, wenn sie den unterschiedlichen Fachkulturen in Schule und Hochschule bewusst Rechnung trägt und Brückenschläge in beide Richtungen vornimmt.

Mathematik lehren an der Hochschule: Perspektiven aus Mathematik und Didaktik

Mathematik ist schön, wichtig, schwierig. Wie können wir Studierende an diese faszinierende Welt heranführen? Warum gelingt es manchmal besser, manchmal schlechter? Ist es überhaupt möglich, über das komplexe Feld des Lernens und Lehrens mit all seinen Variablen objektive, übergreifende Aussagen zu machen? Was lässt sich aus der Geschichte der Mathematik und des Mathematiklehrens lernen? Sowohl Mathematiker als auch Didaktiker können zu diesen Fragen einiges beitragen, doch ihr Verhältnis ist nicht selten geprägt von Missverständnissen, manchmal auch von gegenseitigem Misstrauen. Wir wollen der Frage nachgehen, was die Stärken, aber auch die Grenzen der verschiedenen Perspektiven sind und vor allem wie sie voneinander profitieren können.
